"A" as Art

These are some of the most important 2013 art exhibitions in Florence.

Florence’s Oltrarno as a rive gauche

Twelve Impressionist works on display at Palazzo Pitti until the 5th of January

“This Winter, the Oltrarno district of Florence is going to become for a couple of days the Italian Rive Gauche”: these are the words Cristina Acidini has used to refer to the 12 masterpieces lent by the Musée d’Orsay to Florence, which are going to be exhibited in the Dance Hall of the Winter apartments of Palazzo Pitti’s Gallery of Modern Art, also referring to the works of art simultaneously sent by the Jaquem art-André Musée to Villa Bardini. This extraordinary event is the result of an exchange between these important Franch and Italian museums.

Dal Giglio al David. Arte civica a Firenze fra Medioevo e Rinascimento

Galleria dell'Accademia, until December 8th, 2013

Adopting a totally new approach to a fascinating topic, Civic Art in Florence from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance focuses on works of art originally commissioned to decorate the public buildings of Florence which housed the magistracies tasked with running the city, the halls of the various Arti, or guilds, and the city gates and walls.

The Grand Prince Ferdinando De' Medici (1663 - 1713) Collector And Patron Of The Arts

Uffizi Gallery, until November 3rd 2013

To mark the 300th anniversary of the death of Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici (1663-1713), the Galleria degli Uffizi is planning to devote a celebratory exhibition to this key figure who was one of the most important collectors and patrons of the arts in the entire history of the Medici Grand Dukes of Tuscan. The son of Cosimo III and of Marguerite-Louise d'Orléans, Ferdinando nurtured two overriding interests, in the theatre and music and in the figurative arts, from a very early age.
